EQ Applied by Justin Bariso is a refreshing and practical read for leaders seeking to grow in their emotional intelligence.
Bariso writes, “The pause is the most important of all the emotional tools in your toolbox.” So simple and yet so difficult to practice! This section on the power of the pause was the highlight for me. In addition, his writing on trust, authenticity, empathy and feedback are also very helpful and applicable.
Bariso refers to feedback as a gift. With a growth mindset, seeking feedback is a key to uncovering blind spots and growing in the areas of self-awareness, self-management, and in relational and social strength. It is important to be intentional to receive feedback from those whom we know we can trust and who have our best interests at heart. There are ways to do that well!
Under ‘surprising ways to build emotional intelligence’, the author suggests that to watch movies, listen to music, read, write, engage in sports and exercise, and travel, are all very accessible ways we can strengthen our self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
Begin by asking “In what situations do I find my emotions working against me?”. While the answer to this question may be uncomfortable, it may also be the start of a journey of growing deeper in your emotional management. Effective leaders are self-aware when it comes to their emotions and how to manage them. EQ Applied will help on this journey of self-discovery and growth.
